Testicular Cancer - What we learned!

We named our company JustinTymeSports because the mini basketball hoop idea was inspired by Justin back in 1993 when he was just nine years old. In December of 2005, Justin was just getting ready to start his final semester at Michigan State University when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Although Justin is doing fine now, he had to endure two surgeries and nine weeks of chemo treatments. Through pure determination, he was also able to complete his requirements for graduation. We are very grateful for his recovery.

After much discussion, we thought it was important to share some of this information with our readers since many of you are young men or parents of young men. We were surprised when we found out that Justin had cancer - he was only 21. Then we learned that the typical age for testicular cancer is 15 - 35.

JustinTymeSports does not plan on becoming a cancer resource website. We simply want to help increase awareness by sharing some important facts about cancer and several links to respected cancer resources.

Cancer Facts:
1. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.
2. More than 1.3 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer this year (Only about 8000 of these are testicular cancer cases).
3. Early detection is very important. If you suspect something is not normal, see a doctor right away.

We would also like to encourage you to help support ongoing cancer research. After reading fact #1, you may realize that the research could help you or someone you know. In the early 1970's, about 90% of the testicular cancer cases were fatal. Today, over 90% of the cases are cured - thanks to research done in the 1970's. When we found out the American Cancer Society was holding a Relay For Life in our community, we knew we had to be a part of it. JustinTymeSports formed a team only three weeks before the event (most teams were formed six months in advance). Our team raised over $2500 and our community event raised over $50,000.

JustinTymeSports is already planning on being part of the Relay For Life again next year. We will also help support the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) by offering the LIVESTRONGTM wrist bands to our customers. 100% of the proceeds from the wrist bands goes to the LAF.
