Mini-Hoop Games: How to Play the Beat-The-Clock

You can play as many different games on your Mini Basketball Hoop as you can on a full-size hoop. In this series "Mini-Hoop Games", we will explain the rules of some of the most popular games including H-O-R-S-E, 21, Around the World, and more. Each month we will explain a new game. This month's game is Beat-The-Clock.

The great thing about shot clock games (also called beat-the-clock) is that you can make up your own variations of the game. You can play with one or more players. If you play with more than one player, you can take turns making shots or you can shoot at the same time. With our new JustScoreTM Scoreboard, you can even assign someone to keep score and run the shot clock.

Determining Who Starts

Each player takes a shot from the Free-Throw Line - the player who misses first, starts last.

Buzzer Beater

How to Keep Score

This is a great game if you know basketball history. Pick one of your favorite games from the past where the game was won in the last seconds of the game (Michael Jordan did this more than once), then try to recreate that shot. The object of the game is to make the game winning shot before the buzzer sounds.

Playing the Game

The player who won the Free-Throw contest starts the game. Set the timer (shot clock) with the number of seconds for the shot. Have one of the other players in-bound the ball and try to make the shot. You stay in the game if you make the shot...you are eliminated if you miss. The last one to be eliminated wins.

Last-Second-Shot

How to Keep Score

In this game, there are five levels. Each level has two different shooting positions (i.e. left layup and right layup). You should determine the positions for each level so that the shots get harder as you progress. The object is to make both shots at each level before the buzzer sounds in order to move to the next level. You should also set the shot time so that the last shot for each level is made at the last second.

Playing the Game

Start the shot clock and dribble to the first shooting position. If you make the shot, move to the next position. If you make both shots before the buzzer sounds, you get to continue on to the next level. If you do not complete the shots before the buzzer, you stay at the same level and lose your turn. The first person to complete all five levels wins!
