Mini-Hoop Games: How to Play the Game of Twenty-One (21)You can play as many different games on your Mini Basketball Hoop as you can on a full-size hoop. In this series "Mini-Hoop Games", we will explain the rules of some of the most popular games including H-O-R-S-E, 21, Around the World, and more. Each month we will explain a new game. This month's game is Twenty-One.
Two Player VersionThe two player version of Twenty-One is played without any defense. The players match there skills from different spots on the court. The first player to score exactly 21 points wins the game.
Determining Who StartsEach player takes a shot from the Free-Throw Line - the player who misses first, starts last.
How to Keep ScoreThe game is played to 21 points, hence the name of the game. Each free throw is worth 2 points and a layup is worth 1 point.
Playing the GameThe player who won the Free-Throw contest starts the game. Player 1 shoots first from the free throw line. If the player makes the shot, he/she is awarded two points and is able to continue by taking a layup shot. If the player makes the shot, he/she is awarded one point. Player one continues until he/she misses a shot at which time, the other player repeats the process.
13 Points - Start OverIf a player makes a shot causing their score to be exactly 13 points, their score is set back to 0 and the player loses their turn. They must start over on their next turn.
Over 21 Points - Back to 14If a player makes a shot causing their score to be greater than 21 points, their score is set back to 14 and the player loses their turn. They must start over with 14 points on their next turn.
Three Player VersionThe three player version of Twenty-One is played with one player on offense and the other two on defense. The first player to score exactly 21 points wins the game.
Determining Who StartsEach player takes a shot from the Free-Throw Line - the player who misses first, starts last. The player who misses next is next to last. Each of the remaining players continue shooting until there is only one player left and that is the player that starts the game.
How to Keep ScoreThe game is played to 21 points. Each free throw is worth 1 point. A field goal is worth 2 points. A field goal from beyond the three point line scores 3 points.
Playing the GameThe player who won the Free-Throw contest starts the game. Each player must start from the "out on top" area at the top of the key. Player 1 (offense) checks the ball to one of the defenders. When the defenders are ready, the ball is returned to the offensive player and play begins. The offensive player must in-bound the ball by dribbling or shooting. As long as the offense retains possesion (including offensive rebounds), they can continue to try to score. If the player makes a 2 or 3 point field goal, he/she is awarded the points and proceeds to the free throw line to shoot free throws. The defensive players stand on either side of the hoop while the offense is shooting the free throws hoping to rebound a missed shot. If a defender rebounds a missed free throw, they must take the ball behind the take back line before trying to score. For each consecutive free throw made by the offense, they are awarded one point. If the offense makes three free throws in a row, they are able to take the ball out on top again and try for another 2 or 3 point shot. If the offense does make another shot, they return to the free throw line again. Player one continues until he/she misses a shot at which time, the next player repeats the process.
Take Back LineIf the defense rebounds a missed shot, the game continues. This player is now the offense and the other two players are the defense. The new offensive player must take the ball back behind the take back line, which is typically the same as the three point line, before they attempt to score.
Steals, Blocked Shots, and TurnoversWhenever the offense loses the ball to the defense by a steal, blocked shot, or air ball, the new offensive player does NOT have to take the ball behind the take back line. Instead, they are able to try to score immediately - this is considered a fast break. If a defender rebounds a shot that hit the rim, they must take the ball back behind the take back line.
FoulsAny time there is a foul, the ball must be taken out on top again.Back to top |
